Several keys can fit in one box, but the useful capacity depends on their shape and thickness, not just their number. The Metal KeyPod gives an estimated key capacity rather than a universal guarantee. Start by separating keys for different locks from duplicate spares, then decide which keys belong in storage and which access must remain available.
Count Locks and Duplicate Keys Separately
A key for a second lock is not the same thing as a spare for the first. List locks by a private label, then count the working original and duplicates for each. For example, two locks with two keys each yield four physical keys but only two lock types. If the keys are identical for both locks, test that fact rather than assuming it from their appearance.
The buying guide covers device selection. This article is about custody: where keys are placed and which one remains available if a box, phone or account is inaccessible. Do not put every working copy behind one mechanism without a documented early-access plan.
Why a Key Count Is Only an Estimate
Metal KeyPod has been promoted with space for approximately six to seven keys. That is a rough marketing capacity, not a guarantee for seven of any shape. Thick heads, long shafts, attached rings and the arrangement inside the compartment all affect fit. Measure your actual keys and compare the box’s usable interior dimensions before buying.
A key lying diagonally may prevent a door from closing even when its length appears below the quoted dimension. Never force the box shut around a key or assume the timer can compensate for a key that is physically stuck. If the dimensions are not current or clear, ask the seller for internal measurements and a fit demonstration.

Metal KeyPod is the capacity example. Its approximate six-to-seven-key wording depends on key dimensions; verify your own bundle and keep an independent accessible spare. See the product details and confirm the selected option before ordering.
Make a Simple Key Inventory
Record a non-sensitive inventory without publishing key cuts or lock identifiers. The example below uses two locks with two keys each and shows different custody roles.
| Lock | Working key | Spare | Storage decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | A1 | A2 | Box candidate A1; accessible spare A2 |
| B | B1 | B2 | Box candidate B1; accessible spare B2 |
The Instigator product package lists three metal keys, a reminder to read the exact included-parts list. A key box stores compatible keys but does not alter the lock or make all three keys fit the box automatically. Decide custody for each copy before a timer starts.

Instigator lists three metal keys in its package. The inclusion count informs a storage plan but does not prove any particular key box fits all three. See the product details and confirm the selected option before ordering.
Decide Which Spare Must Remain Accessible
Choose a separate location or trusted access plan for an early stop. It should not depend on the same app, timer, phone and box used for routine storage. Test the physical key with the lock before relying on it. Record who can reach it and how to end the activity if power or connectivity fails. Do not publish that location in a shared app note.
If a key box is used with a manual cage lock, opening the box only makes a key available. The person must still retrieve it and use it on the cage. A spare kept outside the box is especially important when the box’s early-access rules are unverified.
Compare Storage Around Your Actual Keys
Metal KeyPod and the original KeyPod differ in format and current app/timer details. Compare usable interior space, the selected key bundle and documented access procedure for each. An estimated count on one model does not carry over to the other. If you have bulky keys, photograph their dimensions beside a ruler for your own fit check, not their cuts for a public page.
Record the chosen box, keys inside, spare location and current opening instructions in a private inventory. Capacity is a fit question first and a timer question second. Leave a box out of the plan when the key cannot sit freely inside it.

The original KeyPod is a separate timed storage option. Compare its usable interior with the real keys; do not transfer a Metal KeyPod capacity estimate to it. See the product details and confirm the selected option before ordering.
An accurate inventory names each lock and copy, checks physical fit, and preserves a reliable spare. It does not turn a marketed key count into a safety guarantee.
